Community Involvement
Smoke Detector Program
Sumter Firefighters will install smoke detectors, sponsored by the City Living Program, Black River Electric Cooperative, Lowes, Wal-mart, and th S.C. Fire Association, in your home free of charge.
Individuals wishing to have a smoke detector installed need to visit/call the HQ fire station and fill out required paperwork.
CERT Program
The Sumter Fire Department offers the FEMA approved 20 hour CERT training curriculum to the citizens of Sumter. The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates citizens about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations . Using the training learned, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available.
The CERT training is offered free of charge. Participants have no obligation or commitment to respond or act in the event of a disaster.
Any groups interested in the CERT training program can contact Captain Rose, FD CERT Team Leader, at HQ station.
Aluminum Cans for Burned Children Program
The Sumter Fire Department collects aluminum cans to help burn victims through the the Medical University of S.C.
Individuals wanting to donate aluminum cans can drop them off at any of the city fire stations or call the fire department and the fire department will be happy to pick them up.
Bike Program
The Sumter Fire Department is a drop off point for unwanted bikes that may be new or in need of repair. The bikes are refurbished by the Optimist Club and delivered during the hoidays to children.
Bikes may be dropped off at any of the city stations.
Easter Seal Program
Every Easter, Sumter Firefighters hit the streets collecting donations for Eater Seals. Funds collected are used to assist the citizens of Sumter.
