Board of Zoning Appeals
The Sumter City-County Board of Zoning Appeals is a nine member Board appointed by the Sumter City and County Councils. The Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) is a quasi-judicial body that hears requests for variances from zoning regulations, appeals of staff decisions, and special exceptions.
The BZA generally meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 3:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers located on the 4th Floor of the Opera House located at 21 N. Main Street. Requests for BZA action must be submitted at least 22 days prior to the scheduled meeting.

Historic Preservation Design Review Committee
The Historic Preservation Design Review Committee is a seven member committee appointed by Sumter City Council. It is tasked by the Council to implement design review for all exterior appearance and materials in the two design review districts. Those districts are the Downtown Historic District and the Hampton Park area. The Committee uses the basic standards established in the City of Sumter Zoning and Development Standards Ordinance and locally developed Design Review Guidelines. Design review includes buildings, landscaping, fences, and signs. Colors may be approved by the Planning Staff when using the already approved color pallets.
This committee meets on the fourth Thursday of each month at 3:30 p.m. in the Conference Room of the Planning Department Office located at 12 West Liberty Street.
